The house is a combination of three terrace lots that were acquired by the Chan family in 1861. Four generations lived in the house before it opened as a museum in March 1985. The name of the museum is derived from the term Baba, an honorific manner of addressing a Straits-born gentleman and Nyonya which addresses a Straits-born lady.
Inside the museum, you can explore the well-preserved interior of a typical Peranakan household, complete with antique furniture, traditional costumes, intricate porcelain, and other artifacts that showcase the lifestyle and traditions of the Peranakan community.
Guided tours are available, providing visitors with detailed information about the history, customs, and significance of various items on display.

Also know as Porta de Santiago, originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, it was once part of a fortress complex that included walls, ramparts, and other structures. A Famosa is one of the few remaining remnants of European colonial presence in Southeast Asia and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress was later captured by the Dutch and then the British, who destroyed most of it, but the gatehouse survived.
